WEEK 35 "Overdose On The Holy Ghost"
Hello beautiful people! How is everyone doing?!
Miracle of the week! Obviously I see big and small miracles every single day but this one really hit me! As we were driving down the road on the way home from dinner we saw a woman in a big empty parking lot. It looked like she was looking for something. We drove past and both sister Higgins and I felt like we needed to turn around and talk to her. We parked and asked her what she was looking for. She was a homeless woman looking for heart shaped rocks for her boyfriend who had recently gotten hit by a car and passed away. We looked for rocks with her and prayed with her. She asked if we had food or water. Sadly we didn't. But we both felt a huge urge to help her. We drove home to get water, food, pillow, blanket, hygiene care, and of course a Book of Mormon. As I was searching in our cabinets for food I found a fortune cookie in the back. We cleaned these cupboards out when we moved in and I never once saw this cookie, neither did sister Higgins. Of course I was curious and felt like I should open it. It read "Lend a hand to those less fortunate." We both just dropped our jaws and seriously ran to the car to drive back to Jessica! Obviously we have no way of teaching Jessica at this time but she is amazing and accepted the Book of Mormon happily! God needed our paths to cross for whatever reason! This experience changed my perspective a little bit:) I'm grateful for the big and small miracles each day.
Funny story: yesterday at the tail end of sacrament meeting, a man in a white shirt and sweatpants ran up to the front row of the room to watch the speaker. After the meeting was over, we followed one of the bishopric members out to talk to this guy. He was obviously high and something was off. He talked about a million miles an hour and kept talking about gang-bangin and how other churches were "a trip".
He really was looking for God, so we had our zone leaders drive to the church during this lil meeting because they'd have to teach him given the situation haha. About 30 min into talking with him, he starts rapping. We didn't notice at first, because he'd been talking so fast the whole time, but it was definitely one of the most memorable things that's happened to me in a church building that's for sure. The best part is, I recorded it...
Here's just a sample:
"I'm so tired of being a parasite. I feel like a leach but I just wanna drop to my knees…
I can't stop now and I won't stop now. Cuz I gotta overdose on the Holy Ghost and I'm lit on a new level…
They're not strapped up with a glock
They're strapped up w the Holy sword
You best believe they're rollin w the Lord"
Anyways, Oregon is great, people are crazy but we love them!
SPIRITUAL
In my studies this week I read: "...and also our lives passed away like as it were unto us a dream..." Jacob 7:26
Have you ever woken up the next morning after a really good day asking yourself "was that even real? Was it a dream? My time serving often feels like a dream. I'm a missionary? Did I really step on that plane? Am I really in Oregon? Has it really been 9 months since I've seen my family? 9 months since I hugged my momma? Am I really teaching the sweetest people on the planet? Did I seriously just cut my hair again? Did we have a picnic with Vinny this week? Do we seriously still have an aunt problem? Did that guy seriously rap in the bishop's office? How did we find Jessica? Wow, did that miracle actually just happen? Have my companions really become my forever best friends? How did I get so lucky?
Everyday I catch myself feeling like life is a dream. As Jacob says 'our lives pass by as it were a dream'. My purpose in writing this is that life is short. Our life here on the earth is small in comparison to the eternity that lies ahead. How will you live each day? Is your day or even life going to pass by you? Will you pray? Will you read your scriptures? Will you call your mom? Will you minister to your neighbors? Will you befriend the lonely one? Will you love your family? Will you forgive?
Life is going to pass us by (like a dream) whether we are doing good things or bad. There is always more that we can do to center our lives on Jesus Christ. This week I invite each of us to focus on the things that matter most!
I love you all with my whole soul! I love this work, I love the Gospel and I am so grateful for my Savior and his everlasting love!
With all my love and prayers,
